The Book Project is intended to be a fun project that connects with the enjoyment of reading. In years past I would have reading logs that seemed to take away the enjoyment of reading, so I developed this assignment to bring back the enjoyment of reading. The project has two parts; The artifact (pictures shown below) and the write up. Let me explain each of them.
THE WRITE UP: This portion should be very easy. All that is required is about a paragraph explaining how your artifact connects to the book. I DO NOT want a summary of the book! For example for the black journal artifact from the Harry Potter artifact below, the student simply explained that this journal represents Tom Riddles journal and the fang and the goo coming out of the book represent when Harry stabs the book and it kills a portion of Tom Riddle's (also known as Lord Voldemort) soul. The journal was given to Ginny, and Harry saves Ginny while in the Chamber of Secrets. This is all I am looking for...explain the artifact and how it connects to your book.
THE ARTIFACT (examples shown below): The student is being asked to produce an artistic representation of the book they are reading. For example, below you will see a black diary that comes from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This artifact represents the journal that belongs to Tom Riddle and which Harry destroys with a basilisk fang. Students have made replicas or original pieces of artifacts. In fact, there have been many students who have used food to represent parts of the books they are reading. One student made "the pie" from the book, The Help (they did not use the same ingredients...just FYI). Another student made cupcakes with pig faces decorated in the frosting to represent a blackmail that one of the characters was being forced to eat 6 cupcakes in front of her crush. One student even brought in chicken wings from Wingshak decorated in a diorama to represent characters from the Hunger Games. Whatever the students choose for an artifact, it must have a creative perspective.
